Welcome to Music Class!
Welcome! My name is Mrs. Miragliotta, and I am the music teacher at Stone Spring Elementary! Each day we will explore music in a variety of ways while we learn to read, write, perform, and create music ourselves. Some of my favorite ways to experience music class are through singing, playing instruments, moving, dancing, playing games, and telling stories. I choose each activity for students with purpose, and everything they do in music contributes to their development as an artful and literate musician (meaning they will learn to read and write music in their time at Stone Spring). We follow a Kodaly approach to music literacy, and we also use Orff techniques with instruments and movement. I look forward to sharing in this musical growth with you!

Report Card Grades in Music
The ratings we use on report cards for music feedback are "E", "S", and "N". When a student is understanding all of the concepts we are covering in class and can perform these elements with reasonable consistency, they receive a "S". This means they are absolutely on target with where they should be. Due to the nature of music comprehension, I know that some students will excel above and beyond in their degree of consistency in music knowledge and skill. These students receive an "E". I prefer to think of "N" as "not yet" - that these students are working toward success of certain skills, but need some more help from me. As we are just starting to dig into the nitty-gritty skills at this point in the year, I rarely give "E's" in the first marking period, and I rarely give them in Kindergarten.
Both families and students should understand that grades are not a measure of character, nor of potential; an "N" grade in 2nd grade does not mean that your child will never grow up to be a concert pianist or famous conductor (they very well could!). It is merely a "report" of how they are understanding certain music content at that time.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions!
