How I became the Vision teacher

Although I have worked with Harrisonburg city Schools since 1995, I have only been the Vision teacher for 5 years.  Prior to this amazing job, I had the opportunity to work with the Early Childhood Special Education program where I was a classroom teacher at Waterman Elementary School.

Education is my second career, having initially started in the Army right after high school.  I spent 12 years on Active Duty, going from the great state of Texas to such beautiful locations as Hawaii and my mother's homeland, Japan. After receiving a ROTC scholarship, I returned to Virginia and completed my first degree at James Madison University.  My commission as an Army officer in the Signal Corps led me to Germany where I supported the 3rd Infantry Division for 4 years, to include during Desert Storm.

Upon becoming a parent to a wonderful son, I decided to end my time on Active Duty and joined the Army Reserves and entered the Troops to Teachers Program.  Upon completion of the program, I was certified as a Special Education teacher and worked with the Killeen Independent School District in Killeen, Texas in a class with 3 year olds with special needs.

In 1995 I returned to Virginia to be closer to family and started my time with HCPS.  I love working with all of my students and have enjoyed establishing amazing relationships with all of their parents. After teaching Early Childhood Special Education for 13 years, I was given the opportunity to attend George Mason University and earn my specialization as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired.

In 2010, I began to teach Zumba to the faculty and staff of Harrisonburg City Schools. It's an activity I really enjoy and any way that I can help my fellow educators to become more fit is something I want to be involved in.  Along with  "regular"  Zumba, I am licensed to teach Zumba Toning, Zumba Gold, Aqua Zumba and the latest from Zumba Fitness, Zumba Senato.  So if you are interested in taking Zumba classes, please feel free to contact me!
