This lesson plan incorporates safe use of the internet as students work
with beginning sounds. Students explore potential safety problems and

Focus: Advertising/TMI
(Too Much Information)
Objectives:
- The student will understand the difference
between web page content and advertising on the web page.
- The student will understand the importance of
protecting personal information and/or passwords.
- The student will become aware of the issues
involved with clicking on a pop-up window and sharing too much information
about yourself.

- Discuss the computer safety rules that are

Objectives:

the computer is someone’s property and needs to be respected.
- The student will be introduced to how to cite
material found on the computer through teacher modeling.
- The student will be introduced to rules for behaving online.

Activities:
- Discuss the computer safety rules that are
posted in the lab and the division Acceptable Use Agreement.
- Have
a discussion about someone posting a picture created by one of the
students with another name on it. Ask them if it is okay to do that.
How would you feel if someone takes credit for your picture? When
using a website with students, talk about how someone worked hard to
create the website and you need to give that person credit for
information collected or images that are copied from that

- Review: Students will be reminded of the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus
