What's Happening in Room 205?

February 17, 2012

It's President's Day weekend...an appropriate time to be learning about the history of the Midwest region, home of Abraham Lincoln (Springfield, Illinois) for much of his life.  Through video recreations and primary sources such as photographs, students are able to "look through the lens" to see the early days of settlement in this region.

One of the most important resources for the Native Americans of the Plains was the buffalo or bison. Students created a "buffalo hide" and told a story on it using actual pictographs, symbols used for words in the Plains Indians language.

         For your calendars:

February 20 - Progress Reorts mailed home

March 2 - Last day of grading period

The days are getting longer!  Enjoy!

January 6, 2012

Welcome to a brand new year! I hope all families had an enjoyable and restful holiday season. Lots of interesting things are planned this month in geography, along with some important dates.

         On this month's calendar:

January 10 - Early Release for students

13 - End of second grading period

16 -17  No school for students (teacher workdays)

20 - Report cards go home

We are finishing the second quarter, which means a new geographic region is coming. The Midwest region is not only farming and tornadoes, but has much more to offer. Watch for new maps and information to come. Students will be memorizing locations, state names and abbreviations and capitals, just as we have done up to this point.

Happy Winter. Stay Warm,

Ms. Bauder

November 6, 2011

It's going to be a busy month! On Tuesday, November 8, parent conferences will be held in all Harrisonburg schools. Hours at THMS are 11:30 AM to 6:30 PM.  If you made an appointment, we look forward to seeing you! If not, you can still call the school office and possibly squeeze into the schedule. Many, many conferences have been planned. See you then.

Tuesday, November 15 will be an early release day for students and staff development for staff. Dismissal is at 12:10.

For Thanksgiving break, schools will be closed Wednesday through Friday, November 23-25.

In Geography class, we started our study of the Northeast. Students will be learning about the geography, climate, history, economy, and cities, now and in the past.

Two weeks ago we welcomed Ms. Jackie McKay, a student teacher and master's degree candidate from JMU. She has already been a great addition to our room, and shows great promise as a teacher! Hope you can meet her on conference day or at some other time.

Thank you so much for supporting the coat drive, the Koins for K-9 fundraiser, and for attending Math Parents' Night. Your contributions and support of the students is appreciated!

Thankfully yours,

Ms. Bauder

October 5, 2011

The brisk morning air must mean fall is here! We have passed the midpoint in the first 9 week grading period. Progress reports have been mailed to all parents. If you have not received them, please let me of one of your child's teachers know.

Thank you for participating in the annual Community Potluck! Many families and staff had an awesome time! This month is Hispanic Heritage Month. Watch for events in the community celebrating Harrisonburg's diversity.

In geography, we are finishing our map and globe skills unit. We hope you enjoyed seeing the salt dough US maps that your children brought home a few weeks ago. Thanks to Papa John's for providing all of the pizza boxes! Next up in geography: The Northeast Region.

A few reminders:

Early Release October 11

No school October 13 (staff development for teachers)

End of grading period and early release October 25

Have a wonderful month!

September 9, 2011

We're almost finished with WEEK 3!  It has been a pleasure getting to know all of the new fifth graders.  Hopefully, the children chatter constantly with excitement about being in middle school. The changes are quite significant for everyone, but each day shows improvement in opening lockers, getting to class on time, and settling into academics.

Don't forget school picture day is on September 14th!  Look for a new update here each month, and please feel free to email or call me with questions or concerns.

With pride,

Ms. Bauder
