DUAL LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM

The Dual Language Immersion Program at Smithland Elementary School uses two languages for literacy and content instruction for 40 children in kindergarten.   The long-term plan of  the program provides instruction in English and Spanish over an extended period of time, from kindergarten through fourth grade. The dual language immersion program model at Smithland is “50/50.” In the 50/50 model, instruction in English and Spanish is divided evenly.  Our program combines students from two language groups for instruction in both of their languages.  Both language groups learn together in Language Arts, Math, Content, Music, Art and P.E. for the entire day.

Goals of the Dual Language
Immersion Program
What are the Advantages of Dual Language Immersion Programs?
  • All students will develop high levels of proficiency in their first and second languages (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
  • Academic performance for both groups of students will be at or above grade level.
  • All students will demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors.
  • Students learn to listen, speak, read and write in two languages.
  • Students achieve at similar or higher levels on standardized tests of reading and math in English  as children not enrolled in dual language immersion programs.
  • Students develop positive attitudes about languages, cultures and backgrounds.
Parents can help in several ways:
  • Volunteer in the classroom.
  • Share with students aspects of the home language and culture.
  • Attend parent education workshops.
  • Share experiences with prospective parents and students.
  • Serve as chaperones for trips.
  • Keep in touch with other dual language parents about the program.
  • Expose your child to books and movies in both languages.
  • Attend cultural festivals.
