Day 1 of Dance Unit

1. 7 Jumps - Danish
 Music - Seven Jumps
 Formation - single circle
 Skills - move CW
 Dance
 All join hands and move CW in a single circle
 When music stops lift right knee - then take a bow
 When music starts up move CW again (or can change direction to CCW)
 When music stops lift right knee, then the left knee
 Repeat above then right knee down, then left knee down, right elbow, left elbow, then whole body take a bow after each
    sequence

2. Greensleeves - England
 Music - Greensleeves
 Skills - right and left hand star, arches, number the couples
 Formation - double circle
     couples are side by side facing CCW - count couples off in groups of 2 and
      designate couples 1 and 2 (head couple and second couple)
Explain: formation made during the dance resembles turning sleeves inside out
Dance
 16 steps forward
 8 steps CW  doing a right hand star
 8 steps CCW doing a left hand star
 16 counts - couple 1 joins hands and goes backwards ducking under couple
 2’s arch as couple 2 goes forward as they lift their arms and make an arch over
  couple 1- the count will be a total of 16 (going back and front will be one 8
  count, and will be repeated to make a second 8 count - couples will be back    in their original spot when finished
 

3. Taught counts of 2, and 4 by doing step to side and touch with a clap - 2 counts
     4 count step to side and touch toe on 4th count and the grapevine step
 hustle step to front and back - 4 counts  (added the hitch with the lift of the knee)
 taught step close step and touch to right side forward then to the left - 4 steps
  backward

4. Wanderer

Lifted the wand over head, behind head, to the sides on the shake shake shake part of the song, in front, down low for pull ups, stand upright and place hands on top then bend knees and stand up, kick to either side, bend knees and kick, toss up, twirl in a circle
 

1. Wooden Shoes - Lithuania - Found in Bohemia and Italy

 Skills - Polka Steps, right and left hand star
 Formation - double circle ( partner beside partner), face CCW

 2. La Raspa - Mexico
 Music - La Raspa
 Skills - heel to heel on opposite feet, elbow swing, 2 hand swing
 Formation-class would be alone at first - then with a partner, then in a circle with
 boys back to center of the circle in a double circle or a single circle with partners
 facing each other - can switch partners on the 2 hand swing -  if in a double circle
 switch to the left to the new partner, if in a single circle facing the partner - switch to
 a new partner just before the finish of the the second elbow swing.
Dance
 3 heel to heel on opposite feet - RLR, then 2 claps - repeat til the music changes
 8 counts - with elbow swing and change direction for 8 more
 face partner on about the 7th and 8th count and the switch to a new partner
 

3. Barn Dance
Music - Wild Wild West
Formation - double circle with one partner on the inside of circle and 1 on outside - facing each
Skills - side to side steps - 4 counts with a toe touch on the 4th count
 hustle step backwards and forwards - 4 counts
 partner turn
Dance
Teach basic steps first and the simple version of the dance:
1. side to side steps - CCW - 4 counts  (repeat CW)
2. repeat no. 1  (can add the turn for the older students)
3. hustle step - move away from partner - 4 counts with a clap
4. hustle step moving to the left to the new partner

4. Train - American

Formation - scattered
Skills - half pivot turns,  jump to a straddle cross legs and do a half turn
Dance
-starting on the right foot
-step forward on the right foot, left foot, right foot, left foot (this is called the train step)
 same side arm raises to a L shape in front of body as you step forward - 4 counts
-take one big step to the right with the right foot and split the feet into a front straddle
 with the right foot in front - 2 counts
-take one big step to the left with the left foot and split the feet into a front straddle with
 the left foot in front - 2 counts
-jump forward and raise both arms (in a L shape) up in the air say Whoooooo....
-jump back and arms go down
-jump feet out in a side straddle, then corss them with the right foot over in front of the
 left making a X shape and make a half turn to the opposite wall
-do 2 train steps starting on the right foot, then stpe forward with the right foot and pivot
 half turn, then do a quarter turn to the left and repeat the entire dance starting with
 the 4 train steps forward.
 

Day 3

1. Israel Circle Dance - Israel
Music -  Hora/Hora Aggadati
 Formation - groups of 3 people side by side facing CCW and holding hands ( like spokes of a wheel)
 Skills - runs, slides into the circle, slides out, marches forward, switching partners
Dance
 8 running steps forward
 4 slides into the circle - slide to the left
 4 slides out of the circle - slide to the right
 face into the circle - group of 3 are in a single line
 4 marching steps into the middle of the circle - clap on the 4th count
 4 marching steps backward out of the circle - clap on the 4th count
 8 walking steps forward CCW - on the 3rd and 4th count the middle person will
  move up to the next group of 3 that is is front of them - say WEEEEEEE......
 Repeat  from the beginning

2.  Schottische - Scandinavia
Music - Schottische
 Formation - without partners at first
 Skills - should be able to hop and walk
Dance
 Take 3 walking steps and hop on the 4th step (RLR hop) with a clap on the 4th count - 4 counts,
then repeat to the left (LRL hop) - 4 counts
Remember the lead foot directs the directions student is going
Variations - go from side to side, forwards and backwards
Have students move around the room and then try following someone.
Can make up into a simple dance in a circle.
 

3.  Whoop there it is
Music - Whoop there it is
Formation - scattered
Skills - slide feet forward and out to side in a L shape, step close step touch moving
              forward, full turn and a quarter, grapevine step to either side, twist down
Dance
Slide right foot forward and back, then to the right and back  (in a L shape)
Slide left foot forward and back, then to the left and back  (in a L shape)
Grapevine to the left and back to the right
Step close step to the left twice starting on the left foot
Step close step to the right twice starting on the right foot
Step to the left & do full turn and a quarter to the left (face new wall)
Twist hips - 4 counts (counts may change depending on song used)

4. Fat Sally Lee

Formation - partners in a double circle with the boys facing out
Skills - slides to the side, hand jive, do-si-do
Dance
Inside dancer starts on the left foot, outside dancer starts on the right foot
Heel, toe and slide once counterclockwise
Heel, toe and slide once clockwise
Repeat above
Slap own legs with both hands - 3 times
Slap right hand with partner’s right hand - 3 times
Slap left hand with partner’s left hand - 3 times
Slap both hands with partner’s hands - 3 times
Do-si-do around partner and everyone moves to the left to a new partner

Day 4

1. Polka Steps
Music -  Polka
 Formation - scattered - practice without music, clap hands to beat - then to music,
  then with a partner
 Skills - 2 gallops on right, 2 gallops on left
       1st step leads the direction of the body (lead foot)
Dance
1st step is long, 2nd and 3rd steps close and quick
step on right, close left to right, step on right - 3 counts
Need Polka step when teaching Wooden Shoes or Patty Cake Polka

2. Patty Cake Polka
 Music - Patty Cake Polka
 Skills - heel/toe, slides, elbow swing, polka step
 Formation - partners in a scattered formation around room, then can do it in a
  single circle with partners facing each other - can switch partners
Dance
 1. heel/toe and heel/toe (start on the same side as partner if doing with someone -
  right for one partner and left for the other)
  3 slides - partners will slide in the same direction
 2. repeat above except in the opposite direction
 3. slap partner’s rt. hand, clap own hands, slap partner’s left hand, clap own hands
  slap both partner’s hands, clap own hands and slap thighs.
 4. elbow swing and find a new partner
 If doing it in a single circle facing partner -  heel / toe sequence slide out of the
      circle first, then heel/toe sequence and slide back into the circle, slap hand
      sequence, elbow swing and go to the next partner ( will need to practice going to
 the new partner before doing the dance.

3. Hora - Israel
 Record- All Purpose Folk Dance - side 2
 Formation - scattered - students should do alone first,  circle - no partners, place hands on each other’s shoulders or holding
    hands
 Skills - grapevine step, small kicks
 Dance
 Grapevine step to the left, kick with rt , kick with left,  and repeat above going in a
      circle
 If students are having a difficult time, have them do 3 jogging steps with 2 kicks -
  music will go faster
 

Day 5

1. Irish Fling - Ireland
 Music - any Irish music
Formation - scattered - no partner
Skills - Irish Fling, New Steps Irish Fling, WW kicks, razzle dazzle, scissors, side/front
 bounces, 5 count Irish Fling, side to side, heel to toe, X side straddles

2 straddles to side - no bounce - 4 counts
2 straddles to front - no bounce - 4 counts
repeat - total of 8 counts
then can add following
Irish Fling step - start on right foot, then left  (2 on each side - 4 total)
Razzle Dazzle step - 2 on each side - 4 total

2. Waltz - ballroom dancing

Day 6
 

1. Tinikling - Phillipines - dance is about a trapper trying to catch a long legged bird in between bamboo poles
Need - tinikling poles
Formation - in a line (one behind the other ) between ropes which are parallel to each ,  practice with ropes lying parallel on the floor
Skills - side straddles, jumps, half turns, grapevine
Dance
- can be done with 4 counts or 3
For 3 count dance:
- jump twice in the middle of the poles - jump out of poles and straddle legs
 repeat
 Variation - jump in the middle of poles, do half turn, jump out of poles
     start outside poles, step right foot in, then left foot, then right ft. out, then
     left ft. out, repeat going to the left
 Poles - students on poles will tap poles down twice then slide them together and repeat - continues movement of poles
For 4 count dance:
- jump twice in the middle of the poles then jump to the outside of the poles twice
- students working on the poles will tap the poles down twice then slide them together and tap them twice together

2. Can use Jump Bands - use charts and work in groups of 3 or more
 

Day 7
1. Big Circle  Mt. Dance - Colonial American

Formation - scattered with a partner to practice steps
       in a single circle facing partner

 heel/toe slide, allemande left grand right/left

 start with partners in scattered formation
 students should practice elbow swing, 2 hand swing, do-si-do, rt/left hand star,
  heel/toe slide etc.
 Start music and let students do above with partner - call out steps - switch partners
 Progress to partners moving in 2’s to 2 other students as teacher calls out steps
 Progress to single circle and teach other steps (promenade, corner, thread the
  needle, grand right and left etc)

2. Clogging - American
Music - Mountain music
Formation - scattered or in a single circle
Skills
-bounces - bend knees to music - let body weight drop down
-bounce/bend down - on way up kick rt. ft. out
-repeat 2 with left ft.
-do above traveling in a circle
-shuffle step a. smallest step in clogging - kick right foot out in front on floor - should
 have 2 sounds-1 touch of foot on the way out and one on the way back
 b. do no. a then drop weight on right foot
 c. shuffle left foot and drop weight on left foot
 d. travel in circle CW - then stand still
-basic step - shuffle on right foot and drop weight on rt. ft, then shift weight on ball of left ft. then step back on rt. ft. , repeat above on left ft.
-chug - feet together - slide feet forward - push legs forward and come back and bend knee, keep feet on floor also can go from side to side
 1 ft. chug - 1 knee up - slide other foot down use heel of foot to take ft. forward

1. These days can be set aside for assessment such as:
 - students will create their own dance patterns using any of the taught skills.  Each
    dance must have a certain amount of skills according to grade level.
 - Students will choose the skills from a glossary of dance terms listed on a poster.
 - Students will choose their own music.
 - Students will perform their dance for their classmates.
 - The pattern must be repeated at least 3 times.

2. Students will assess their skills by using a checklist.
